Sinossi
Nawi racconta la storia di una ragazza di una zona rurale del Kenya che con coraggio si ribella a un matrimonio forzato. Quando suo padre decide di darla in sposa in cambio di una dote in bestiame, Nawi con l’aiuto del fratello Joel, fugge verso Nairobi. Il senso di responsabilità la induce a tornare quando apprende che la sorellina è destinata a prendere il suo posto. Nawi, allora, torna per affrontare la sua famiglia e il marito, decisa a rompere il ciclo e a riscrivere il destino di innumerevoli spose bambine.
Nawi tells the tale of a young girl from rural Kenya who bravely stands up against a forced marriage. When her father decides to marry her off in exchange for a dowry of livestock, Nawi, with the help of her brother Joel, escapes to Nairobi. A deep sense of responsibility compels her to return upon learning that her younger sister is set to take her place. Nawi comes back to confront her family and the man she was meant to marry with one goal in mind: to rewrite the fate of countless child brides.

I fratelli Toby e Kevin Schmutzler dirigono film insieme fin dall’infanzia, uniti dalla convinzione che il cinema abbia il potere di promuovere il cambiamento sociale. Dopo aver realizzato il cortometraggio storico About German Women e debuttato nella regia teatrale con Hunger and Greed, incentrato sui crimini dell’industria dei rifiuti, hanno co-creato il documentario Netflix Biking Borders. Questo progetto ha contribuito a finanziare la costruzione di sette scuole in aree remote dell’Africa e del Sud America.
Apuu Mourine è una musicista, designer e regista emergente, nata e cresciuta in Turkana (Kenya). Nonostante i tabù culturali e le resistenze incontrate, ha intrapreso la carriera musicale sin da giovane. Attraverso la sua arte, Apuu si impegna a guidare il cambiamento all’interno della sua comunità, i Turkana, ponendosi come narratrice ed educatrice.
Vallentine Chelluget è una regista autodidatta che vive a Kisumu, in Kenya. In qualità di regista, sceneggiatrice e produttrice, Vallentine ha realizzato numerosi cortometraggi, che le hanno aperto le porte del reparto regia in diverse produzioni keniane pluripremiate, come Deranged, Okethoree e Wife for Hire, quest’ultimo candidato al Kenyan Film Prize.
Directors
Brothers Toby and Kevin Schmutzler have been directing films together since childhood, united by their belief in cinema’s power to drive social change. After creating the historical short film About German Women and making their theatre directorial debut with Hunger and Greed, which focuses on the crimes of the waste management industry, they co-created the Netflix documentary Biking Borders. This project helped fund the construction of seven schools in remote areas of Africa and South America.
Apuu Mourine is an emerging musician, designer, and filmmaker, born and raised in Turkana (Kenya). Despite cultural taboos and resistance encountered, she began her musical career at a young age. Through her art, Apuu is committed to driving change within her community, the Turkana, positioning herself as both a storyteller and an educator.
Vallentine Chelluget is a self-taught filmmaker based in Kisumu, Kenya. As a director, screenwriter, and producer, Vallentine has created numerous short films, which paved the way for her to work in the directing departments of several award-winning Kenyan productions, including Deranged, Okethoree and Wife for Hire, the latter of which was nominated for the Kenyan Film Prize.
